- Title:
- Gateway into City, Nepal. Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- View of a gateway into a city, with building on each side. Cities in the Kathmandu Valley were historically surrounded by walls with gates at entrance points. Patan, for example, is reputed to have had 21 gates. Some of the gates have long disappeared while others have been rebuilt after earthquakes or other damage. There is no other known image of this gate and the city is not known. The Nepali text engraved on the arch states that the gate was built by Bam Bahadur Rana (1818-1857), younger brother of Prime Minister Jang Bahadur Rana, in 1854 (1911 Vikram Samvat).
