- Title:
- [An image of the 18th century reservoir pond feeding the Balaju Baisdhara public fountains in Kathmandu.] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- View showing a one-story masonry building at one edge of the pond, and a group of guards and civilians. The 18th century reservoir pond feeding the Balaju Baisdhara public fountains in Kathmandu. The twenty-two crocodile-head stone water spouts of the Baisdhara are unseen, being below the other side of the ornamental masonry wall behind the human group. Twenty-one of the spouts were built by King Jayaprakash Malla (reigned 1722-1733) while the twenty-second was built by Rana Bahadur Shah (r. 1777-1778). The pond was fed by a natural underground source that has failed. Since the photograph was taken, the masonry wall has been rebuilt in a new design, the water flows only to the main spout and the area of the pond has been redeveloped as part of an admission-charging public garden.
