- Title:
- [A view of the Patan Darbar Square, Lalitpur, looking south.] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- A view of the Patan Darbar Square, Lalitpur, looking south. The photograph was taken from the east steps of the Vishwanath Temple, a detail of which fills the right edge of the photograph. The temple was built in 1627 by King Narasimha. Narayan Chok - the oldest palace of the Malla kings - is in the foreground on the left. The palace has been rebuilt several times since its original construction in the 17th century; extensively in 1734 by King Vishnu Malla and again in the 19th century. Since 1997, the palace has housed the Patan Museum. The Patan Taleju Temple, built in 1671, also by Srinivasa Malla, rises above the southern portion of the palace. The Narasingha Temple, a small shikhara built by the powerful noble Purandar Singh in 1589, is visible on the right side of the photograph, mostly obscured by the detail of the Vishwanath Temple. The pillar between the Taleju Temple and the Narasingha is topped with a statue of King Yoga Narendra Malla and wives. It was erected in 1700, during his reign. Behind the pillar is the Harishankar Temple built by the king's sister, Rudramati, around the end of his reign in 1705. The Taleju Bell, a secular structure built by King Vishnu Malla in 1736, is barely visible through the structure of the Harishankar Temple. The Chyasim Deval Krishna Temple is also just visible behind the Harishankar. The Chyasing Deval is a large eight-sided shikhara-style structure built in the early 18th century, perhaps 1723, by King Vishnu Malla before his reign. It is sometimes attributed to Yogamati, built after the death of her father, King Yoga Narendra Malla. In the centre of the photograph, a gathering of men in white turbans can be seen filling the space in front of the Taleju Bell as they file up to or into the Sundari Chok. The Sundari Chok was commissioned in 1628 by Siddhi Narasimha Malla. Corresponds to Photo 1424/1(82) (glass plate negative); Photo 1424/3(8) (albumen print).
