- Title:
- [A view of the Patan Durbar Square, Lalitpur, looking south.] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- A view of the Patan Durbar Square, Lalitpur, looking south. The elephants of the Vishvanath Temple fill the right side of the photograph. The temple was built in 1627 by King Narasimha. A pillar supporting a statue of Garuda, Vishnu's mount, rises behind the elephants. The large two-tiered pagoda behind the pillar is the Krishna Mandir, built in 1637 by King Siddhi Narasimha Malla. A crowd of men in white dress and turbans observe the photographer from the centre of the photograph. Behind them a series of temples and associated structures cross the photograph until disappearing into the left: the two-tiered Narayan Temple built in 1652 by King Srinivasa Malla; the small shikhara-style Narasingha Temple built by powerful noble Purandar Singh in 1589; a pillar topped with a statue of King Yoga Narendra Malla and wives erected in 1700, during his reign; the Harishankar Temple built by Rudramati, the sister of King Yoga Narendra Malla, around the end of his reign in 1705; the Taleju Bell, a secular structure built by King Vishnu Malla in 1736); and the large eight-sided shikhara-style Chyasing Deval Krishna Temple, built in the early 18th century, perhaps 1723, by King Vishnu Malla before his reign or by Yogamati after the death of her father, King Yoga Narendra Malla. Corresponds to Photo 1424/1(82) (glass plate negative); Photo 1424/3(7) (albumen print).
