- Title:
- [A side view of Bagh Darbar (Bag Darbar) and its surrounding walled garden, Kathmandu, looking northwest.] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- A side view of Bagh Darbar (Bag Darbar) and its surrounding walled garden, Kathmandu, looking northwest. A man can be seen working in the middle of the garden, giving scale to the built structures. The spire of a Ram Chandra temple and a pagoda-style temple are visible behind the palace and the tall Dharahara is to the right. The steps of the Jagannath temple and the corner of the Central Jail are seen in the lower left of the photograph. Bagh Darbar (also known as the "Garden Palace" and the "Tiger Palace") was built in 1805 by Bhimsen Thapa, replacing a smaller dwelling built by his father Amar Singh Thapa (Sanu). Bhimsen Thapa, prime minister of Nepal from 1805 until his death in 1837, lived at the palace throughout his time in office, making additions to the building and expanding the complex. Bagh Darbar then saw a period of successive owners and occupants: Thapa descendants, Shah royals and Ranas - interspersed with seizures by the Government of Nepal and further renovations. Bagh Darbar was completely destroyed in the 1934 earthquake but was rebuilt by Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana for his son, Hari Shumsher JBR. The new palace, called "Hari Bhavan", was eventually sold to the Government of Nepal. It housed the Kathmandu Metropolitan Office until seriously damaged in the 2015 earthquake.
