- Title:
- [A view north to buildings in the Thapathali Darbar complex, Kathmandu.] Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- A view north to buildings in the Thapathali Darbar complex, Kathmandu. The buildings are Newar in style but the palace in the centre of the photograph shows a later addition of a Rana-style columned portico. Nain Singh Thapa (1777-1806/7) of the Thapa dynasty is credited with building the initial palace complex. The darbar transferred to the Rana dynasty when it was acquired by Nain Singh Thapa's grandson, Jung Bahadur Rana (in office 1846-1856), eventually passing through his descendants. In 1887 Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana (prime minister from 1901 to 1929) captured the palace complex and lived there until 1904. Numerous buildings, gardens and temples were added to the complex throughout the late 1840s to 1900. The Ranas then moved on to newer palaces and turned the structures to other purposes, including a hospital for the public. None of the buildings in this photograph remain.
