- Title:
- View of Palace with hills behind. Photographer(s): Gaye, Joseph
- Scope & Content:
- A view looking northwest to Phora Darbar with a Newar-style palace behind and the hills of the present Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park in the distance. The neoclassical Phora Darbar ("Fountain Palace") was built by the architect Kishor Narsingh Rana for Bir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, prime minister of Nepal from 1885 to 1901. The palace design was unique, resembling a circular Greek temple surrounded by a moat. The darbar was purchased in 1965 by the United States government and the palace and gardens demolished and replaced with a country club for Americans. At the time of the photograph, the Newar-style palace in the background was occupied by Lt. General Jeet Shumsher JB Rana, a younger brother of Bir Shumsher JBR. This palace was sold to Chandra Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, who demolished it to build a new palace - Kaiser Mahal - in 1895 for his son, Kaiser Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana (b. 1892 - d. 1964). Kaiser Shumsher occupied Kaiser Mahal until the Ranas fell in 1951 after which he sold the palace to the government of Nepal. The building now houses the Kaiser Library, assembled by Chandra and Kaiser Shumsher, and a government ministry. The two palaces, once located in the outskirts of Kathmandu, are situated in a cluster with other neoclassical Rana darbars: Phora Darbar was located immediately adjacent to Bahadur Bhawa on the west, Seto Darbar on the east and Narayanhiti Darbar to the north. The palace pre-dating the Kaiser Mahal on the site was immediately to the west of Narayanhiti Darbar and north of Bahadur Bhawan. The photographer, setting up his camera in front of the gardens of the Seto Darbar, statues of which can be seen in the lower right of the photo, was able to capture both palaces by looking north-west.
