In the throne room at Ayodhya (right), King Dasaratha is seated with his four sons, his minister Sumantra and his chief priest Vasistha. Yudhajit, Queen Kaikeyi’s brother and Bharata's maternal uncle, has come to take Bharata to visit his maternal grandfather King Kaikeya and the inseparable Satrughna wants to go along too. The two princes respectfully take leave of their father Dasaratha. They then make their way to the zenana (left), are greeted by the doorkeeper and say farewell to their mothers. One of the queens reaches out affectionately to both boys.
