Dasaratha enthroned in durbar tells the Brahmins Vasistha and Vamadeva and his minister Sumantra of his intention to resign his throne to Rama as regent; on the left, these three summon Rama and Laksmana. Above four Brahmins begin to prepare for the requisite sacrifice and a beautifully caparisoned horse and elephant are led towards the palace indicative of the long list of what Vasistha says is necessary. Four women out in the open talk to each other.
