Rama and Laksmana on the right, with Rama now changed into contemporary court costume, approach the gate of Kaikeyi's palace and leaving their sandals at the door come into the audience chamber. They kneel respectfully before the dejected king, who cannot bring himself to speak to them, and again before Kaikeyi, who tells Rama on the king's behalf of his being exiled to the forest for fourteen years while Bharata will be given the kingdom.
