Three papyrus fragments from mummy cartonnage, written on one side and mounted on cardboard in the same glass frame.

Upper papyrus (A): mutilated at the sides; 7 lines written on the front along the fibres; the upper and lower margins measure 20 mm.

Lower left papyrus (B): Left portion of a dark-brown papyrus sheet, with surface damage and plaster residue; the front bears the beginnings of 6 lines, written along the fibres.

Lower right papyrus (C): Fragment of a papyrus sheet, broken off at all sides, with traces of plaster and some surface damage. Portions of 8 lines run along the fibres on the front. There is a sheet-join.

Scope & Content:
Fragments presumably from the same document, which a letter written by Philonides possibly to Cleon. The bearer of the letter, a certian Xanthippus, is being recommended by Philonides. The back preserves remains of the painted decoration.

Five fragments of varying size from a papyrus recovered from mummy cartonnage; written on one side along the fibres. The back bears remains of the cartonnage painting. Housed in two glass frames named Papyrus 509(1) and Papyrus 509(2).

Private Letter to Cleon (P.Petrie Kleon 11, P.Petr. II 13(19), P.Petr. III 42h(5), P.Lond. III 545 descr., TM 7671)
Scope & Content:
Fragmentary letter of Philonides (his name is lost) to his father Cleon, showing affection and care for him, and asking him to come home for a visit. Theodorus may be left in charge of the irrigation works when the Nile retreats.

Lower portion of a papyrus sheet from mummy cartonnage, with surface damage and gaps in the preserved portion; the detached scrap may belong to the same sheet, but this remains uncertain. Writing runs across the fibres on one side, the back being blank. The larger fragment preserves 17 lines from the foot of a column; the smaller fragment has few letters of 6 lines. Mounted on cardboard in a glass frame. Another fragment containing the beginnings of lines 6 and 7 is in Trinity College, Dublin, inventoried as Pap. FF 15 [42 h (5)].

Fragmentary letter, presumably addressed to Cleon, on private matters, with reference to an audience with the king that Philonides, Cleon’s son, is about to have, to the settlement of the matter regarding some building plot, and to a payment made by Philonides to Polydeuces, his brother.

Three joining fragments from mummy cartonnage forming the lower portion of a papyrus sheet; with some surface damage; written on one side across the fibres; the back is blank. Portions of 15 lines from the foot of a column survive; lower and side margins are partly preserved. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Philonides writes to his father Cleon, urging him that a letter be written by Telestes, presumably to the king, and reporting on some matters of palace life. With address on the back.

Upper portion of a papyrus sheet of light colour from mummy cartonnage, mutilated throughout and with detached scrap; with plaster residue, especially on the back. Writing runs across the fibres on the front and along them on the back; the back bears traces of one word. On the front there are portions of 11 lines from the top of a column written across the fibres; upper and left margins survive; minimal margin was left to the right. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.
