Petition on a Case of Assault (P.Grenf. I 38, P.Lond. III 634 descr.,TM 262)
Scope & Content:
Petition to Numenius, strategus and chief of the bodyguards (archisomatophylax), from Pocas, a police official, who complains about an assault of which he was the victim, perpetrated by a priest of the temple of Suchus in Krokodilopolis in the Pathyrite nome. He asks that the offender be summoned.

Papyrus sheet, almost complete but heavily damaged by holes located along the folds, especially in the lower half and at the top. Writing runs along the fibres on one side, the back being blank. There are 21 lines, which occupy slightly more than half of the sheet. The blank space at the bottom measures 135 mm. There is a sheet-join running along the height of the sheet at c. 20 mm from the left edge. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Recto: Account of waggon-loads of barley for year 12 of an unnamed king. Verso: Account headed Phamenoth 5, with a list of names, among whom are dyers (column 1), and a record of the expenditures (column 2). With traces of another column to the left.

Papyrus fragment, broken off to the right (front), damaged by holes at the bottom and in the left-hand margin; written on both sides. The front bears two columns written along the fibres; of the second, only the beginnings of the lines survive; the first column is complete. The intercolumn measures 30 mm and the left margin 50-55 mm. A sheet-join runs along the right edge. On the back, there are two columns and traces of another column to the left, written across the fibres; the first is abraded at the bottom and consists of 19 lines; the second has 5 lines. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Fragments of a papyrus sheet, lacking most of its right-hand side and a strip in the middle, and damaged by few holes in the preserved portion. The front bears 8 lines, with a gap between lines 3 and 4; of line 4 only few traces remain; lines 1-3 and 5-6 lack the ends. The ends of lines 2 and 3 are preserved by a papyrus in Heidelberg inventoried as P.G. 1304. The writing on the back runs along the fibres and is the other way up in relation to the text on the front. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.

Small papyrus sheet, complete, with minor surface damage in places; writing runs across the fibres on the front; the back has a dark spot. The front bears six complete lines; all margins are extant. Fragment of a papyrus, further portions of which are Papyrus 687A, Papyrus 687E and a papyrus in Paris, Sorbonne, inventoried as P. Bouriant 46. This fragment, defaced in places, is broken off at the top, left and bottom; it bears writing on one side along the fibres, the back being blank. Parts of two columns remain, with little blank space between them; no margin was left to the right. This fragment joins with the one in Paris, which is the continuation and completes the second column. Papyrus 687A contains the upper part of column 1, and papyrus 687E the foot of column 1.

The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

Fragmentary papyrus sheet, lacking most of its left portion; the verso is dark brown. The text was written on the verso across the fibres, and continued with two lines along the fibres on the recto. The rest of the recto remained blank. On the verso there are 28 fragmentary lines. Papyrus 686e contains a few more letters of lines 21-23.
