Fragmentary letter of Philonides to his father Cleon. The subject is unclear owing to the loss of text, but several men are mentioned, among which is Xanthippus.

The larger fragment contains portions of 24 lines, all lacking the beginnings and some mutilated at the end too; the smaller fragment bears few letters of 6 lines. Two fragments of a papyrus sheet which was reused for mummy cartonnage as soles, with surface damage throughout. Writing runs across the fibres on one side; the text breaks off at the bottom and to the right; between the left and the right fragments 4 letters are missing on average. Part of the left margin survives. The papyrus is mounted on cardboard in a glass case.

A: Portion of a roll, with plaster residue in places; written on both sides. On the front, there are 24 lines from the foot of a column, written along the fibres; on the back, there are 2 lines running along the fibres, and two other lines written the other way up.

B: Portion of a roll, with plaster residue in places; written on one side along the fibres; the back is blank. The front bears the beginnings of 13 lines from the foot of a column; the detached scrap has a few letters from two lines.

Left papyrus (A): Papyrus fragment, broken off on all sides; written on one side along the fibres; the front bears parts of 2 columns. Of the first, the ends of 21 lines remain, of the second the beginnings of the same number; the back bears no writing and is partly covered with plaster.

Right papyrus (B): Fragment from a medium-brown papyrus roll, imperfect at the foot and with plaster residue in places; written on both sides. The front bears portions of 4 columns written along the fibres; the column width is about 65 mm. The upper margin survives. The back bears parts of 3 columns written across the fibres and broken off at the bottom.

Upper portion of a papyrus sheet of light colour from mummy cartonnage, mutilated throughout and with detached scrap; with plaster residue, especially on the back. Writing runs across the fibres on the front and along them on the back; the back bears traces of one word. On the front there are portions of 11 lines from the top of a column written across the fibres; upper and left margins survive; minimal margin was left to the right. The papyrus is housed in a glass frame.
