The Ganges Canal; illustrated by photographs. Taken by T. G. Glover, Lieut.-Colonel, Royal Engineers. 1867. Photographer(s): Glover, Thomas George
- Scope & Content:
-
Imprint: Roorkee: Printed at the Thomason Civil Engineering College Press. MDCCCLXVII.
Oblong folio half leather volume, red buckram boards, measuring 272 x 378 mm, with red leather title panel reading 'Ganges Canal Album' pasted onto upper board. The volume contains a printed map of the Ganges Canal, 8pp. of descriptive text, followed by 32 albumen print views mounted one to a page (recto), with letterpress captions printed beneath each image. Individual photographs, or groups of photographs, are also accompanied by detailed printed text. This volume is a second edition of Glover's work. The first issue, in square folio format, appeared in 1864 and contained 42 prints (see Helmut Gernsheim, 'Incunabula of British photographic literature' (Scolar Press, London, 1984), item 251). Running in a south-easterly direction to the north of, and roughly parallel to the Jumna, the Ganges Canal had its head-works at Haridwar and was officially opened in 1854.
