55 drawings bound into a volume; 10 depicting rulers of the Punjab and Sikh heroes, 10 buildings and places in Delhi, Agra, Lahore and Amritsar, 35 occupations.

By a Punjab artist, Lahore, c.1860.

The volume has an Indian binding and is entitled: ‘Punjab Portraits, Buildings & Professions. Coloured Drawings,’ the spine and title having been added by the Library. All drawings are inscribed in English by an Indian. On the last page is the following inscription in roman characters in the same hand: ‘Is ketab men sab Panjab ki chis hai Raja log, naqsha, sab kam karne wala, tin kori panna hai, ekso bis taswir hai, sab sahib log walait dikhlane ko lejate hain, yih kitab lahore men banti hai, qalim ka kam hai’ (In this book are all Punjabi things. Rajas, landscapes, all the trades. There are 60 pages, 120 pictures. All the sahibs take it to show in England. This book was made in Lahore. It is done with a pen). Water-colour; size of volume: 9.75 by 7 ins.

Purchased 23 April 1915.

Note: As can be seen from the inscription, this is an incomplete set of drawings, five pages being missing when the book was acquired by the Library. Sixty (see Add.Or.1452-1511) appears to have been the normal number of drawings in a standard set. The drawings are in a broken-down Indian style, the figures shown in isolation against an uncoloured background. The rulers and heroes are shown in pairs and seated on western-style chairs. In the inscriptions ‘King’ appears to be a translation of ‘Raja’ and does not imply that the person so described was actually ruling.
