NASH, EDWARD (1778-1821)
Miniature painter. Worked in Bombay from 1801 to 1810. Exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1811 and 1820, including some of his Indian subjects. His portrait of Jamsetji Bomanji, Master Ship-builder in the Bombay dockyard, was engraved by W. Haines and published in London, 1812.
Three framed portraits.
---------------------
WD4527-4528
Two small portraits of an Indian armed retainer and of an ayah with a child done at Mangalore, 1805-06.
Pencil and watercolour; drawings laid down on mounts 19 by 15 cm and in original black and gilt frames 26 by 22.5 cm.
Purchased 2005.
Note: Both portraits have the heads properly finished but the remainder of the bodies and the landscape only lightly touched in with colour. The manner is that of Henry Edridge (1769-1821), as the inscription below remarks: ‘It was a successful formula, the figures being drawn in black lead, with careful stippling, with touches of Indian ink and a small amount of coloured wash’ (‘New Grove Dictionary of Art’).
