Autograph journals kept by Commander Albert Hasting Markham, Captain of HMS Alert and second-in-command of the British Arctic Expedition. The journals document Markham's time on the Alert, and record the sledging journey during which he obtained the record of farthest North.
The journals contain numerous watercolours, pen and ink sketches, and printed ephemera produced onboard ship.
The journals are accompanied by three photographs, showing the Alert in winter quarters at Cape Beechey, and a view to the south towards Cape Rawson.
