- Title:
- Personal papers of Helen Muriel Jerram
- Scope & Content:
-
Personal papers of nurse Helen Muriel Jerram, including her memoirs, letters to family members, and some photographs.
Helen Muriel Jerram was born on 29 May 1887 in Godalming, Surrey, and died in 1975 in Exeter, Devon. Known as Muriel, she worked as an assistant nurse and housekeeper in Delhi and Port Said before she joined the Serbian Relief Fund in the early 1920s to help run the orphanage in Nis. This work seems to have interrupted by European politics and the Second World War, but she continued to support the disadvantaged back in England by finding accommodation for victims of the blitz in Chelsea, London.
