The items in this series have been removed from their original context of John Maynard Smith's offprints collection of scientific publication by other authors, which contained a large number of unannotated publications held elsewhere in British Library publications (e.g. journals). Due to the size of the collection and to avoid duplication with items held in other parts of the British Library, the bulk of unannotated, published items in John Maynard Smith's offprints collection have not been retained with the manuscripts. Items retained in this series include manuscripts such as letters and drafts as well as annotated items, proofs etc. that vary from, or contain new information in addition to that contained in, published items. In addition, some unannotated published items have been retained in this series for the convenience of researchers where they relate to manuscript items (e.g. discussed or referred to in letters). To preserve the original context of this series and to preserve information about Maynard Smith's reading and exchange of publications with other scientists, the larger number of offprints in John Maynard Smith's collection is being documented through a bibliography.
