The Minute Books and Ledgers contain the administrative records of the Literary Fund, recording in outline the deliberations of its various committees and giving details of its financial affairs.
This series consists of four sub-series.
The first sub-series (Loan 96 RLF 2/1) comprises the main run of Minute Books, covering all the general meetings of the Committee at which cases were discussed, as well as some extraordinary meetings. The main run includes details of the decisions regarding applications, but generally only records whether the application was accepted, and if so the amount of relief granted, rather than recording the intricacies of the Committee's debate. Administrative matters are usually recorded somewhat more fully. The cases for particular applicants can be checked against the Minute Books by referring to the catalogue records for the Case Files for dates. Cases were almost invariably considered at the next meeting after the date of application.
The second sub-series (Loan 96 RLF 2/2) consists of two volumes of indexes to the main run of Minute Books. The indexes, prepared by the Fund’s Secretaries, are invaluable finding aids for material in the main run of books.
The third sub-series (Loan 96 RLF 2/3) contains secondary sets of minutes from sub-committees that dealt with Fund business outside the regular meeting schedule.
The fourth sub-series (Loan 96 RLF 2/4) consists of surviving volumes of ledgers and accounts detailing the Fund’s financial affairs. It also contains a single letter book, covering the years 1887-1898.
