These papers were accumulated by Charles Canning both before and during his time in India, and are separate from the 'official' sequences of papers. They have been arranged into a broadly chronological sequence, and cover the following areas:
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/1-5: Canning's appointment to India, including letters sent to him by friends, colleagues, and members of the East India Company, including officials.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/6-10: Correspondence sent to Canning at the time of his departure for India, including briefing papers.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/11-16: Journey to India, including visit to Egypt, and arrival in India.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/17-25: Various administrative papers, including those on subjects such as finance, Oude, postal service, telegraph, religion, and railways, as well as the appointment of the positions of Private Secretary and Military Secretary, dating from before the Indian Mutiny.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/26-34: Correspondence with various family members, such as Lord Clanricarde and Stratford de Redcliffe, and political colleagues, including correspondence relating to Lord Ellenborough.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/35-39: Various papers relating more directly to the Indian Rebellion.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/40-47: Later administrative papers, including those relating to the reorganisation of the Army, and finance.
Mss Eur F699/1/4/7/48-50: Miscellaneous papers and newspaper cuttings.
