MSS Mus. 367-376. Alan Bush Collection. Vols xlii-li. ‘Wat Tyler’, opera in a prologue and two acts, to a libretto by Nancy Bush; [1950-51]. Commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain in the Festival of Britain Opera Competition. Performed privately in London in 1951 with the composer at the piano; broadcast in April 1952 by East Berlin Radio; first staged performance Leipzig, 6 Sept. 1953. Libretto published Joseph Williams, 1956; vocal score published Berlin: Henschelverlag, 1954 (in which the Prelude is printed after the Prologue) and London: Novello, 1959, both with English and German words. Dedicated in 1974 ‘to Hyman Fagan, author of the historical study Nine Days that Shook England, whose instigation and encouragement led me to write the work’ (in a letter of 25 July 1974 to The Times; the dedication is not written on the scores).
