JOHN GOWER. Vols. III, IV. Balades and other poems by John Gower. Printed from the original manuscript in the library of the Marquis of Stafford at Trentham, 1818. Printed. This edition was presented to the Roxburghe Club on 17 June 1818 by George Granville Leveson-Gower, afterwards Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, Earl Gower and later (1833) 2nd Duke of Sutherland, one of the original members. It comprises all the poems of the Trentham manuscript except the English 'Carmen de pacis commendatione' (see Add. 59495, ff. 5-10v). The rubric that in the original (f. 10v) follows this poem and introduces the next was set up in print but replaced in the present proofs (Add. 59497, f. 7) by a variant version supplied by the editor. The text was printed, partly in red, in a gothic type-face on uncut wove paper, without pagination, by William Bulmer at the Shakspeare Press.
Two volumes.
