Letters Forwarded by Dead Letter Office
- Scope & Content:
-
This sub-series consists of folders containing approximately four hundred items of post refused by Louis Philippe [formerly King Louis-Philippe, King of the French 1830-1848] and other family members in exile at Claremont, Esher, in Surrey. The letters were forwarded in batches from the Dead Letter Office to the Postmaster General, the first Marquis of Clanricarde, Ulick John de Burgh, in some instances with a wrap round annotated with the amount of postage involved. The letters are from a variety of senders worldwide. The majority are in French and were sent from all over France, some from supporters, many seeking positions or asking for financial assistance, and some are addressed to 'citoyen' or the 'ex roi' from supporters of the new regime. Some of the letters have enclosures of newspapers and other publications. Other letters were posted in England, and several are from North America, in support of the King.
