- The freehold of these properties was purchased by the Secretary of State for India from Lieutenant General Edward Perry Buckley in 1866 for £11,000. Martin Steele held a lease on 6 Gardeners Lane and 34 Charles Street. Steele in turn granted an underlease of 6 Gardeners Lane to James Price. Charles David Steel held a lease on 7 Gardeners Lane and 32 Charles Street. Charles Jones held a lease on 33 and 35 Charles Street. He occupied number 33 and let number 35 to weekly tenants. Henry Greenslade held a lease on 36 Charles Street. The upper part of the premises above Greenslade's shop was let out as apartments. William George Robert Penley was a yearly tenant at 38 Charles Street and ran a school on the premises. 45 Charles Street consisted of a dwelling house and stables, with 17 Gardeners Lane situated at the rear. Thomas Ferris held a lease on 17 Gardeners Lane and 45 Charles Street, and granted an underlease to Thomas Whitmore.
