- HM Office of Works purchased properties for the new government buildings at Westminster under the terms of the Public Offices Extension Act 1859 and the Supplemental Public Offices Extension Act 1861. Part of this land was released to the Secretary of State for India as the site of the new India Office. Additional land for improving the India Office site and surrounding layout was acquired by the Secretary of State at auction and through compulsory purchase sanctioned by the India Office Site and Approaches Act 1865. The properties which were cleared to form the site of the India Office were: Charles Street - numbers 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48; Gardeners Lane - numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22; Duke Street - numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 17, 19; Baker's Alley - numbers 1, 2.
