Scope & Content:

This volume contains a series of despatches to and from the Secret Committee of the East India Company, from 20 August 1842-30 September 1842. The enclosures relate to the state of affairs in Cabool [Kabul], Jellalabad [Jalalabad] and other parts of Affghanistan [Afghanistan]; Upper and Lower Sinde [Sindh] and Beloochistan [Baluchistan]; Aden; Judda [Jeddah], Persia [Iran]; Bahrein [Bahrain], Guttur [Qatar], Koweit [Kuwait], Sharga [Sharjah], Ras al Khyma [Ra’s al-Khaymah], Oomulgevein [Umm al-Qaywayn], Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi], Turkey, Khiva, Zanzibar, and Abyssinia [Ethiopia].

The foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 617; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. A previous foliation sequence, which is also circled, has been superseded and therefore crossed out. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers. The sequence contains two foliation anomalies: f 2a and f 22a.

Arrangement:

The enclosures to each despatch within the volume (each item) are divided by blue dividers. The sets of enclosures to despatches are arranged in numerical (by despatch number) and chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume. The enclosures within each despatch are mostly preceded by an abstract of contents in which the despatch itself (not included) is numbered 1, the abstract of contents 2, and the enclosures 3, 4, etc. The numbers listed in the abstract of contents are recorded for reference on the verso of the last folio of each enclosure, along with the original reference, and a description of each enclosure.
