This volume contains the Proceedings of the Political branch of the Foreign Department of the Government of India for the months of [June-September 1870]. These Proceedings comprise copies of correspondence of the Government of India Foreign Department (renamed Foreign and Political Department in 1914).
The subjects covered include:

- Intelligence received from Afghanistan and Central Asia, notably from Cabul [Kabul]
- Affairs in Burmah [Burma/Myanmar], notably from Mandalay and Bhamo
- Affairs in Nipal [Nepal] and Bhootan [Bhutan]
- Affairs in Persia [Iran]
- Affairs in the Persian Gulf
- Affairs in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]
- Affairs in Turkestan [also known as Turkistan, a historical region of Central Asia]

A small amount of correspondence in French is present in the volume. Papers prior to June 1870 are also included.
