GORDON PAPERS (MOFFITT COLLECTION). Vol. XIX (ff. 16). Photographs; 1857-circa 1882. Includes a view of Gordon's official residence as officer commanding the Royal Engineers, Gravesend (f. 9), two contrasting photographs of Ibrahim Fawzy Pasha, governor of Khartoum (ff. 14, 15), the latter showing him in irons after his fall from power, and an engraved copy (f. 16) of the photograph of Gordon which appears in B. M. Allen's Gordon and the Sudan, 1931, with the caption 'the last portrait of Gordon, taken in Brussels 1884' with an acknowledgement to the Gordon Gallery at the Royal Engineers Museum, Chatham. The original photograph could not have been taken in 1884, however, as an identical engraved copy, also with the facsimile signature in the same position below the portrait, had already appeared as the frontispiece of Colonel Gordon in Central Africa, edited by G. Birkbeck Hill, published in 1881. An entirely different portrait, also captioned 'the last portrait of Gordon', appears in Lord Elton, General Gordon, 1954.
