View of coco de mer nut. With additional note on reverse reading 'The coco de mer or Lodocea Seychellarum is called by Linnaeus 'The Prince of the vegetable kingdom.' 47 years elapse before it bears fruit and 200 years ere it reaches maturity. The weight of the fruit is from 30 to 40 lbs, and takes 7 years to ripen. The leaf is 25 feet long and 14 wide. The tree in germination, form and production of fruit is extraordinary and therefore an interesting subject.' Mounted on photographer's cabinet card, with printed legend, 'Coret, Phot. Ile Maurice.'
