Diplomatic correspondence, primarily English, 1614-1636
- Scope & Content:
-
This is a file of the Trumbull papers, which came to the family through Georg Rudolph Weckherlin (1584-1653), government official and poet. Wekherlin came to England with experience of government in Württemberg and active support for Frederick V, Elector Palatine and his wife Elizabeth. He was closely involved with English government, and particularly foreign affairs, from late 1625 onwards, from when he served on the personal staff of a succession of Secretaries of State, starting with Sir Edward Conway. From 1625 he was de fact secretary for the Latin tongue. In the early 1630s he also became secretary interpreter for the German tongue and deputy secretary interpreter for the French tongue. The collection here has many letters to and from Charles I, as well as some papers relating to broader political matters in Northern Europe. The volume includes original letters to Charles I from Cardinal Richelieu (ff. 78r-79v) and Marie de Medici, Queen Mother of France (ff. 82r-83v).
The status of King Charles's letters seems to vary. Some are actually labelled copies (Weckherlin himself attests that ff. 51r-52v is a true copy), and where letters of 1627 and 1636 appear on the same page, there is presumably later copying at work (ff. 48r-49v). But even such copies were generated by a person close to the machinery of royal government, and from the hand of somebody working with these materials throughout- and many of Charles's letters are evidently in Weckherlin's own hand. Many 'copies' are as likely to be drafts, sometimes clearly so where there are emendations, and probably sometimes when the text is clean; at worst they may be 'office copies' of correspondence sent out. The most striking are those copies where the King signed his own name and added the appropriate subscription, the address has been put on, and where there are signs of a seal having been applied (e.g. ff. 84r-85v, 169r-170v). Two (ff. 110r-111r, 112r-113r) are in King Charles's own hand throughout and signed by him.

f. 57r: Letter to Louis Frederick, Duke of Württemberg-Montbéliard, Windsor, 16 Sep 1628. The author is not explicitly named, but seems to be a subject of the Duke's: perhaps his emissary to the Court of Charles I?

Provenance:
The papers here probably derive from the collections of Georg Rudolph Weckherlin (1584-1653), government official and poet, who served a succession of secretaries of state from Nov 1625, and in the early 1630s was appointed secretary interpreter for the German tongue and deputy secretary interpreter for the French tongue. By marriage, his papers became part of the Trumbull papers.
Correspondence and papers of the Trumbull family, consisting chiefly of the archives of the diplomat William Trumbull (circa 1579- 1635), his eldest son, William Trumbull (1603-1678), the latter's father-in-law, Georg Rudolph Weckherlin (1584-1653) and son Sir William Trumbull (1639-1716).
Bought by the British Library in Sotheby's sale, 1982.
