LEAKE PAPERS. Vol.. XI (ff. ii+41). Materials for the Life of Admiral Leake by S. M. Leake II, but not included in the privately printed version issued in 1750; circ. 1740 (see the draft title-page, f. 1). Autograph. Viz.:-(I) 'Comparison' with other distinguished contemporary admirals (noted in the preface of the printed edition, p. iv). ff. 3-9b;-(2) Appendix of documents, mainly items referred to in the printed work, which have been copied from Add. MSS. 5440-5443. ff. 10-38. Also included are:-
(a) Four maps relating to Admiral Leake's campaigns. ff. 2. 39, 40;-(b) List of manuscripts used. f. 36;-(c) Note of the distribution of copies of the 1750 edition. ff. 41-41b. The Life was reprinted in an edition by G. Callender, Navy Records Society, vols. lii, liii, 1920, who in his introduction refers to other maps, etc., which were preserved in a grangerized copy of the 1750 edition. Cat. no. 96. Label no. 10. Calf binding, gold- and blind-tooled, 1740, but later re-backed.
