Provenance:
John Monro (b. 1715, d. 1791), physician and specialist in insanity: several of the fragments can be identified with ones mentioned in his sale, Leigh and Sotheby's, lots 3389 and 3390, which passed to Burney and now form part of Burney 276, 277. See also Harley 5672, ff 19-23 and Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Holmes 158.
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar: compiled the collection.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
