- Judiciary documents contained in Box 32. Document 1: Cezario, slave, claimed that he wanted to work in favor of his emancipation, but his master, Marcelino José Rodrigues Castillo, did not allow him to do so. For that, he asked the judge to assign him a solicitor for the legal proceedings, and a trustee who would keep the amount of 700,000 réis that he had saved to buy his freedom. Document 2: Captain Bento Dias Pereira, on behalf of Isabel, the mother of Clarindo, a child slave of the heirs of Manoel Dias da Silva and his wife, offered to deposit 200,000 réis to start a peculium for the future purchase of Clarindo’s freedom. Document 3: Idalina, slave of Belchior Sanches de Brito and his wife, Barbara Pedroso de Brito, residents on the banks of the “igarapé” Jacaré (creek), Breves county, requested legal act of emancipation alleging her masters had not enrolled her in the Emancipation Fund, as required by law. Idalina was the daughter of Carolina Maria de Sant’Anna who, despite the fact that she was living in Belém, closely followed all legal acts. Thomas Proteslato da Silva, judge.
