Charlotte Canning's journal recording the Cannings' voyage to India, via Paris, Marseilles, Malta, Egypt, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Ceylon, and Madras to Calcutta. Includes details of a trip down the Nile to Thebes, Dec 1855; their stay with Lord Elphinstone in Bombay, Jan 1856, and with Lord Harris in Madras, Feb 1856; their reception in Calcutta, and first impressions of India. Includes some small pen & ink sketches, such as: woman in full face veil (12 Dec); contraption for lifting water from canal (14 Dec); arch at Sultan Hassan Mosque, Cairo; palm tree (23 Dec); Karnak (26 & 27 Dec); shrubby plant (10 Jan 1856); geography of Aden (20 Jan); various items of headgear (30 Jan); female child at orphan school (4 Feb); and small boat with outrigger (11 Feb).
Volume originally contained two loose inserts: (i) Handwritten notes from 'Report of the Committee for Inspecting Schools, Benares District'; and (ii) list of activities and visits from Fri 15 Feb to Thurs 20 Feb 1856 while in Madras, including visit to the School of Design, the Museum, the Medical College, the Presidency College, Major Maitland's School, and the Horticultural Show. These are now mounted in a separate fascicule with the volume.
