Charlotte Canning's original journals, recording her day to day activities and experiences, after leaving England. Includes details of the voyage to India via Egypt; daily life in India, including meetings, lunches, balls and other social activities; visits to Barrackpore with Charles Canning; social, political and military happenings, including details of the Indian Mutiny and its aftermath; travels to Madras & the Nilgiri Hills, 1858; travels with Charles Canning to Oude and the Punjab on the Viceroy's first tour, 1859, and to Central India on his second tour, 1860; travels to Simla, 1860; travels to Darjeeling, 1861.
All original journals except Mss Eur F699/2/2/2/5 were damaged in a tent fire on 11 Dec 1859 while on tour.
'Fair copies' of Charlotte Canning's journals, which she made to send back to her family in England, can be found in Mss Eur F699/2/2/3.
