Charlotte Canning's journal recording her activities in India from Sep 1856 onwards. Some entries are brief diary entries, other longer entries record her experiences in more detail. Includes pasted in newspaper cuttings from Feb to Jun 1857 recording military action in Persia, and then the beginnings of the uprising including reports of the actions of the 19th Native Infantry and the progress of the 'Mutiny'.
Journal also includes pen and ink sketches such as: 'man on bundle of reeds fishing' and 'lady travelling in a basket' (opposite 5 Nov 1856); sketch of boat used for canal trip (12 Nov); red flower on large shrub (opposite 15 Nov); tree with 40 ft girth (opposite 9 Jan 1857); unidentified (opposite 5 Mar); ?pagoda (2 May); of people, flowers, trees etc.
Volume originally included six loose items: (i) newspaper cutting dated 6 Jul 1857 regarding the visit of the Queen Dowager and Princess of Oudh to London; (ii) handwritten list of troop numbers in various places such as Calcutta, Dum Dum, Benares, Allahabad etc., dated Aug 1857; (iii) newspaper cutting with items entitled 'Meetings of the Native Inhabitants of Calcutta', 'Meeting of Native Converts of Calcutta', and 'Meeting of the French Inhabitants of Calcutta', May 1857; (iv) newspaper cutting dated 19 Jun 1857 including extract from 'Phillour', 'Azimgurgh' and 'Mutiny at Benares'; (v) newspaper cutting of item entitled 'Disarming the Native Troops at Benares', Jun 1857; (vi) newspaper cutting relating to Benares, 6 Jun 1857. These are now housed in a separate fascicule with the volume.
Also includes six small fragments of unidentified material, both handwritten and printed newspaper cuttings. These are housed in an inert polyester sleeve.
