Charlotte Canning's journal recording her activities and experiences in India, particularly in relating to the uprising or 'Mutiny'. Contains intelligence as it was received in Calcutta, including rumours. Includes pasted in newspaper cuttings, primarily relating to the 'Mutiny'.
Volume originally held loose material. These are now mounted in three separate fascicules. Fascicule 1, folios 1-42: (i) notes for speech to the Calcutta Volunteer Guard; (ii) handwritten notes relating to timeline of the 'Mutiny'; (iii) sketch of unidentified ?building outline on envelope; (iv) paper wrapper; (v) three sepia photographic prints from sketches by Lieutenant Charles Wade Crump, published as tinted lithographs by Vincent Brooks in A Pictorial Record of the Cawnpore Massacre (Henry Graves and Co; London, 1858) namely 'The Battered Barracks in which Hugh Wheeler defended himself' showing the entrenchment at Cawnpore with skeleton and stork in foreground, 'The Chamber of Blood' showing the Bibighur after the massacre, and The Exterior of the House and Well'; (vi) printed order of service dated 24 Jul 1857; (vii) printed prayers from the Bishop of Salisbury dated Nov 1854; (viii) telegram from Governor General dated Calcutta 26 Sep 1857 to Lady Canning and Sir Colin Campbell, Barrackpore, announcing 'Delhi is taken'; (ix) printed letter from Henry Cope, Umritsur, 15 Jan 1858 outlining principle articles procurable in the North West Provinces (x) newspaper cuttings relating to the 'Mutiny'.
