Charlotte Canning's journal recording her activities and experiences in India from Jan 1858, including entries of her trip to the Nilgiri Hills via Madras, and to Allahabad to join Charles Canning. Includes pasted in newspaper cuttings and telegrams recording the progress of the uprising in India or 'Mutiny'. Includes order of service for a commemoration of the Relief of the Lucknow Garrison held at St Paul's Cathedral Calcutta on 21 Jan 1858; news from Governor General's camp at Allahabad dated 26 Feb, printed in the Calcutta Gazette; newspaper cutting detailing battle for the Alum Bagh [Lucknow]; telegram from Sir Colin Campbell dated 15 Mar 1858 informing of the fall of the Kaiserbagh [Palace, Lucknow]; newspaper cutting from the Bangalore Herald, 20 Mar 1858, announcing the re-taking of Lucknow; telegram from Military Secretary, Fort St George, announcing occupation of the Fort at Jhansi; newspaper cutting 'Rebel Notabilities in Oude'; newspaper cutting of the relief of Azimghur; telegram from Allahabad dated 6 Jun 1858 stating that the Governor General was ill with fever but now recovered; newspaper reports of British progress against the uprising;
Also includes pen and ink sketches such as: part of ship showing ADC quarters (3 Mar 1858); curtains (15 Mar); villa at Vellore (16 Mar); plan of buildings [at Coonoor?] (1 Apr); hills near Droog (10 Apr); hut belonging to the Toda people (16 Apr); leaves and fruit (17 May); insect? (6 Aug); tombs near Behrampore (7 Aug) and details of other buildings and their architecture (9 Aug, 15 Aug, 25 Aug); person in two wheeled covered cart with horse (28 Aug).
Volume originally contained of loose items: (i) newspaper cuttings; (ii) telegram dated 5 Feb 1858 announcing Lord Canning's arrival at Allahabad; (iii) service message dated 8 Mar [1858]; (iv) telegram to Lady Canning dated 20 Mar 1858 regarding re-capture of Lucknow; (v) list of names in Charlotte Canning's hand; (vi) telegram from Bangalore dated 2 Apr 1858 regarding capture of Kota; (vii) copy telegram dated 8 May 1858 regarding attack at Shahjehanpore; (viii) copies of 'Public News' dated 11 May; (ix) telegrams dated 18 May 1858; (x) copy of the Fort St George Gazette, 22 May 1858, regarding the Oudh Proclamation; (xi) telegram 24 May 1858; (xii) newspaper cutting regarding the capture of Jhansi, and Lord Canning's proclamation; Bombay Bulletins, 25 & 26 May 1858; (xiii) telegram from Allahabad, 18 Jun 1858; (xiv) 'Latest from Allahabad', 11 Jun 1858 by M. Biddulph; (xv) telegrams from Madras, 20-21 Jun; (xvi) newspaper cutting announcing Lady Canning's arrival at Cutwa; (xvii) draft of a letter from Lady Canning stating that she is unable to accept invitation to land at Palace as she is travelling to Allahabad as quickly as possible [Jul 1858]; (xviii) notes in Lady Canning's hand; (xix) telegram from Dr Leckie dated 4 Aug 1858 stating Lord Canning is well; (xx) letter from Isabella F. Urquhart, 27 Aug 1858 (xxi)newspaper cutting regarding Mr Tayler; (xxii) newspaper cutting regarding movement of forces. These are now housed in a separate fascicule with the volume.

The journal was damaged by fire in Dec 1859 and underwent conservation treatment in 2018-2019. It is missing its front and back boards, and only a small amount of the spine from the original binding remains. There is evidence of water damage.
