Burned fragments of Charlotte Canning's journal recording her experiences in India, with newspaper cuttings and other inserted notes. The original diary fragments have been conserved and housed in three boxes (Part 1, 2 & 3), and arranged into chronological order where material can be dated. Loose material associated with the volume have been housed in two fascicules (Part 4 & 5).
Part 1: Jan - Feb 1859 (4 sheets)
Part 2: 19 May - 27 Oct 1859 (13 sheets). Includes newspaper cuttings from the Calcutta Gazette Extraordinary, unidentified newspaper fragments, and remains of letter from secretary to the Government of the Punjab dated 19 Nov 1859.
Part 2: Undated fragments, from 19 May 1859 onwards (8 sheets). Includes part of pen and ink sketches of building, and of layout of tents in camp, as well as sketch of headgear worn at Durbar.
Part 4: Loose material, folios 1-18 & 20-22: (i) list of dates from Jan - Sep 1859, some with short diary entries; (ii) newspaper cuttings; (iii) note relating to guests, 29 Sep - 2 Oct ?1860 with lists of names, possibly invitees, ; (iv) pen and ink sketch of two figures wearing turbans; (v) two blank pages; (vi) sketch plan of the Governor General's camp outside Ferozabad; (vii) list of people admitted to the Governor General's Durbar at Futtehgurh, Nov 1859.
Part 5: Loose material, folio 19 (oversize): Playbill for 'Storming and Capture of Delhi' at Astley's Royal Amphitheatre Lambeth, 21 Dec 1857.
For 'fair copies' of the journal for this date, made by Charlotte Canning and sent to her family in England, see Mss Eur F6992/2/3/5. Journal has previously been identified as being from 1857, but can be dated to 1859.

The journal was damaged by fire in Dec 1859 and underwent conservation treatment in 2018-2019. Consists of remains of front board, remnants of pages, and fragments of burned pages, all housed in mounted inert polyester sheets.
