Charlotte Canning's copy letter journals, written to her mother and family from India.
Loose leaves enclosed in typescript wrappers, compiled within a hard cover binder. For entries 24 Dec 1857-21 Feb 1858, 8-19 Apr 1858, 22 Apr-3 May see Mss Eur F699/2/2/3/3. Consists of the following parts:
10 Dec 1857-24 Dec 1857: (ff.1-13)
24 Feb 1858-24 Mar 1858: Includes details of travel to Madras, Vellore & Nandydroog. Includes pen & ink sketches of muslin curtains, & hill fort near Vellore (ff.14-29)
24 Mar 1858-7 Apr 1858: Details travels from Nandydroog to Coonoor. Includes pen & ink sketch of a person wearing black & white 'livery' of 'turbans & sashes'. (ff.30-43)
18 May 1858-21 Jun 1858: Continues description of stay in Coonoor, including excursions. Refers to the Government's disapproval of Charles Canning's Oude Proclamation, and their expectation that he might resign, and further news of publication of the 'secret despatch'. (ff.44-57)
21 Jun 1858-11 Jul 1858: Details of travel from Mysore to Madras via Bangalore, including pen & ink sketch of Tippoo's villa gardens (ff.58-71)
6 Jul 1858-3 Aug 1858: Journal written at Allahabad on 10 Sep, describing return to Calcutta and subsequent departure to Allahabad. Includes pen & ink sketch of plan of the yacht 'Soonamookie' (ff.73-80)
4 Aug 1858-29 Aug 1858: Journal written at Allahabad on 14 Sep 1858. Describes voyage on the Governor General's yacht 'Soonamookie' and arrival in Allahabad. (ff.84-101)
29 Aug 1858-2 Oct 1858: Description of Allahabad. Includes pen & ink sketch of trees.(ff.102-111)
2 Oct 1858-15 Oct 1858: Journal written at Allahabad on 28 Dec 1858. Includes account of the Donati comet. This journal part has been misfiled, and continues in the following part (ff.81-83)
15 Oct 1858-31 Dec 1858: Continues from ff.81-83, account of the Donati comet. Includes page of pen & ink sketches, showing reading of proclamation at the Fort; 'native' encampment with camels and elephants; women collecting water from a well; women working in the gardens wearing anklets, amulets and bracelets, f.117 (ff.112-128)
1 Jan 1859-28 Jan 1859: Descriptions of Allahabad. Includes pen & ink sketch of well, and of woman wearing silver bangles. (ff.129-143)
10 Oct 1859-29 Oct 1859: Refers to long break in her copy letter journals. Written on Viceroy's tour, including visit to Oude. Includes pasted news cuttings referring to the Viceroy's Durbar on 24 Oct, and his address to the Talookdars of Oude. (ff.143-161).
2 Nov 1859-17 Nov 1859: Written on Viceroy's tour. Travels from Cawnpore. Includes details of the Durbar at Futteyghur [Fateghur].(ff.162-173)
17 Nov 1859-8 Dec 1859: Futteyghur [Fateghur] to Agra, including visit to the Taj Mahal. Includes pen & ink sketches of architectural details such as cupolas, marble rails and doorways. (ff.174-190)
8 Dec 1859-20 Dec 1859: Journey from Agra to Meerut. Includes sketch of tent and description of the fire on 11-12 Dec that burned Charlotte Canning's belongings. (ff.191-202)
