Mss Eur F699/2/2/3

Charlotte Canning's 'fair copy' journals, which she transcribed and extended from her original notebook journals (Mss Eur F699/2/2/2). These journals contain more elaborate detail than the original journals, are were send to her mother Lady Stuart de Rothesay and sister Louisa, Marchioness of Waterford, intended for circulation amongst close family and friends.

The copy letter journals consist primarily of unbound journal parts, numbered and dated by Charlotte Canning. At some point, two bound volumes were created of some of the journal parts (Mss Eur F699/2/2/3/3 & Mss Eur F699/2/2/3/6). These bound copy letter journals are not always in chronological order. Some journal parts were incorrectly dated and included in the wrong year. Others are inserted in the bound volumes in the incorrect order. Many journal parts contain small pen & ink sketches.

Copy letter journals for 1855 & 1856 (Mss Eur F699/2/2/3/1 & Mss Eur F699/2/2/3/2) were also moved from amongst Charlotte Canning's letters to Lady Stuart de Rothesay in 2016, although correspondence from this period does refer to the copy letter journals and their formatting, as well as Charlotte Canning's desire for their circulation to remain strictly within the circle of her close family.
