Bound volume of Charlotte Canning's copy letter journals, written to her mother and family from India. Journal is a continuation of the Governor General's first tour, and then covers Charlotte Canning's trip to the Himalayas without Charles Canning in May-Jun 1860. Also includes the Governor General's second tour in Central India, Nov 1860-Feb 1861. Includes black & white photograph of Charlotte Canning seated at a table with a sketchbook on her knee and a fan in her hand as a frontispiece. Consists of the following parts:
27 Dec 1859-16 Jan 1860: Meerut to Umballa [Ambala]. Includes pen & ink sketches of mosques, of people jumping down a great well in a village, a marble block being the Crystal Throne (which 'looks like much cracked ice all in one block'), a great pearl, and jars embedded in walls. Written 17 Jan 1860.(ff.1-20)
16 Jan 1860-14 Feb 1860: Umballa [Ambala] to Lahore. Includes pen & ink sketches of architectural features, a sikh man, sketch of Lahore illuminated at night, people crowding to look through a window, & arrangements of tents for the Durbar.(ff. 21-41)
16 Feb 1860-27 Feb 1860: Lahore to Peshawur [Peshawar]. Includes pen & ink sketch of the 'Templar's' Church. (ff.42-54)
27 Feb 1860-17 Mar 1860: Peshawur [Peshawar] to Sealkot [Sialkot] and Deenanuggur [Dinanagar] (ff.55-68)
18 Mar 1860-29 Mar 1860: Deenanuggur [Dinanagar] to Hashearpore [Hoshiarpore] by Kangra. Includes pen & ink sketch of Charles & Charlotte Canning being carried by 'Jompon' [type of sedan chair], and sketch of rafts on the river. (ff.69-80)
30 Mar 1860-18 Apr 1860: Hosheyarpore [Hoshiarpore] to Simla. Includes pen & ink sketch of the beggar women who follow their camp. (ff.81-92)
19 Apr 1869-15 May 1860: At Simla (ff.93-104)
21 May 1860-4 Jun 1860. Himalayan Journal Part1, Simla to Poari on the Sutledge [Sutlej] below Chini. Includes pen & ink sketches of women, of several different types of 'sedan chair' transport such as a dandy, a hill tray, a tonjon, a jompon, a doolie and a palanquin, of the galleried road running along a cliff, of tents, of a tree branch bridge across a river, and of a 'jhoola' or swing seat designed for crossing a river Written 8 Sep 1860. (ff.105-132).
5 Jun 1860-20 Jun 1860: Himalayan Journal Part 2, from Poari on the Sutledge [Sutlej] below Chini to Mussoorie (to 20 Jun), then Mussoorie to Calcutta (8-25 Jul 1860). Includes watercolour map 'copied from General Markham's tour'. Includes description and pen & ink sketch of charcoal making. (ff.133-175)
20 Nov 1860-7 Jan 1861: Calcutta to Central India, Part 1. Journey by rail from Calcutta, then by steamer on the Ganges to Benares, & stay in Benares. Includes pen & ink sketches of architectural features & buildings. (ff.176-205)
8 Jan 1861-8 Mar 1861: Central India & return to Calcutta, Part 2. f.214 includes a pasted in piece of corrected text relating to the Durbar of the Begum Secunder [Sikander] of Bhopal. (ff.206-235)
