Letters to Charlotte Canning from Janet Kay Shuttleworth, Elizabeth Herbert and Edward Marjoribanks regarding planning for the establishment and organisation of a sanatorium for ladies of limited financial means. Also correspondence relating to the appointment of Florence Nightingale to her first hospital post. Initially the establishment was opened at 8 Chandos Street, Cavendish Square on 15 Mar 1850, but moved to 1 Upper Harley Street in 1853. Charlotte Canning helped to found the institution, along with a group of like-minded philanthropic women, and was a member of the Council.
File consists of the following items:
Correspondence from Janet Kay Shuttleworth, Nov 1848, & Mar 1853, suggesting the establishment of a sanatorium for sick ladies of limited means, with list of potential supporters from towns nationwide, including biographical details.
List of principal objects for the Institution by Janet Kay Shuttleworth.
Notes on costings and layout for the establishment.
Printed Report of the Establishment for Gentlewomen During Illness, Mar 1852, with officers and patrons listed. Also printed list of regulations for patients, and blank copy of guarantee that patients were expected to sign.
Notebook containing extracts of a letter from Florence Nightingale dated 15 Feb 1853, copied by Charlotte Canning, regarding the planned organisation of the training institution, or the Establishment itself, as a means of keeping costs reduced.
Correspondence with Elizabeth Herbert, Mar 1853, regarding the appointment of Florence Nightingale. Includes notes, and letters describing means of getting appointment of Florence Nightingale approved by the Committee without letting her know that this has been questioned by them.
Two letters from Florence Nightingale, 7 Sep 1853 & 13 Sep 1853 regarding the move to 1 Upper Harley Street, with reports to Lady Canning on workman, staff and patients.

Letter from Janet Kay Shuttleworth, Germany, 17 Mar 1854.
Two letters from Treasurer Edward Marjoribanks. 10 May 1854 he writes that Lady Canning and the Committee have rejected his proposal for a uniform patient fee; 15 Aug 1854 he informs Lady Canning of the imminent departure of Florence Nightingale from the Institution.
