Includes personal correspondence and estate papers coming into the possession of the second Marquis of Clanricarde, Hubert George de Burgh, on his succession to the Clanricarde estate following the death of his father, the first Marquis of Clanricarde, Ulick John de Burgh, on 10 April 1874, and relating to his ongoing administration.
The papers include:
Correspondence relating to the sale of the West Dean estate by the 1st Marquis of Clanricarde (items 13 to 16). Hubert writes to his father on 19 July 1870 (item 15) expressing his changed attitude to his parliamentary career in light of the sale; in reply a copy letter from Lord Clanricarde of 19 July 1870 (item 14) apologises that Hubert heard by chance of the sale of West Dean and explains his motivations, and discusses Hubert's relations with the family and his parliamentary career.
Two letters relating to Lady Canning's memorial in India: a letter of 3 July 1870 setting out three financial options for its preservation (item 7); a letter of 7 January 1874 from the 1st Marquis of Clanricarde to his son regarding the proposal to move Lady Canning's memorial from Barrackpore to the cathedral in Calcutta, with anonymous note criticising the family for not intervening, a letter that first appeared in the ‘Times of India’ (item 1).
Envelope containing a cheque of 25 January 1873 to a Mrs Wynn for £100 signed by the 1st Marquis of Clanricarde and annotated 'to be opened in case of death' (item 2).
Estate management papers, including: some summaries of accounts 1857-1858 (item 18), and 1874-1875 (items 35 to 36); standing charges on estates of April 1874 (item 4); copy account of expenditure on buildings and improvements in rental 1872-1873 (item 8); report on estates by agent John H Blake, including sections on carriage horses, garden, values, rents, etc (item 6) and his letter of 1 March 1877 regarding game at Portumna (item 11); accounts of sales of stock in 1873 and 1878 (items 32 and 34); civil bill ejectment for overholding of Michael McGann of 9 December 1875 (item 19); list of servants quarterly wages at Portumna Castle of 18 November 1882 (item 31).
Printed certificate of Henry Adam's losses from shipwreck of North Star sailing to Australia and appeal for assistance of 22 Oct 1874, signed by contributors to date (item 33).
And one letter from 1887 relating to tenants, judicial rents and prospects of appeal (item 3).
