This series consists of papers relating to the administration of the Clanricarde estate in Country Galway, Ireland. These papers are papers which came into the possession of the second Marquis of Clanricarde, Hubert George de Burgh Canning, on his succession to the Clanricarde estate following the death of his father, the first Marquis of Clanricarde, Ulick John de Burgh, on 10 April 1874, and papers relating to the ongoing administration of the estate by the second Marquis.
The series includes files relating to: general administration of the estate; rent administration; tenants of the Marquis of Clanricarde’s Portumna and Woodford estates, and the family seat of Portumna Castle; lawsuits between the second Marquis of Clanricarde and his former land agent Francis Joseph Joyce; the lawsuit between Clanricarde and Costelloe and Others, and the appeal by Conry and Others; the debts and financial affairs of John Rushe, and the binding of Arthur DeWitt, apprentice; and the Irish Land Commission.
