Papers relating to rent administration of the Clanricarde estate in County Galway, Ireland, and other papers.
Includes:
Rentals, including: Woodford Mountain District, County Galway, of 10 March 1881, with comparable rents for 1853 and 1872 (item 1); rental and tenants valuation of Townlands, Castlegar, May 1866 (item 15); and rental of Craughwell showing rents in November 1882 and 1883 (item 38).
Memorials petitioning for rent reduction, including from Lord Clanricarde's tenants on 5 October 1885, requesting a reduction in rent of 30%, they state: 'We the undersigned tenants on your Lordship's property, owing to circumstances over which we have no control, are now, compelled to ask your Lordship to come to our aid by allowing as an abatement of Thirty Per Cent on the rents...' (item 2).
Correspondence from local institutions including: Loughrea Board of Guardians with resolution concerning reduction in rent for workhouse and mill of 13 March 1888 (item 20) and of 6 May 1890 (item 48); and Town Commissioner's Office, Loughrea, requesting approval and financial support in securing railway in Loughrea in two letters sent by John Burke in September 1881 (items 41 and 45).
Correspondence from tenants concerning leases, including: letter from Michael, James and Martin Killeen of Keelogue, Eyrecourt, requesting abatement of rent, dated 27 December 1879 (item 11); and application by John Eastem for lease of 'bog land' of 1 February 1887 (item 19).
Letter from Clanricarde (Hubert de Burgh Canning) to John Blake of 24 January 1881, requesting report on progress of collecting due rents, remarking on the 40% deficit in his half yearly income and questioning farming practice of his tenants (item 22).
Papers relating to the case of Patrick Healy of Boherduff, including correspondence of 1884 to 1885 with Crown Solicitor and Lord Liuetenant on decision not to prosecute him for forcible re-entry (items 29 to 32 and 43 to 45, item 43 is annotated by Clanricarde that the Lord Lieutenant 'shirked enforcing the crimes act').
Committee, appeal letter and subscribers to appeal fund on behalf of Richard Mitchell of Park View, County Carlow and Drangan, County Tipperary, a victim of boycotting in Ireland who was being aided to stock a farm in North West Canada (item 42).
Newspaper cuttings from December 1887 reporting Joyce versus Clanricarde libel case (items 5 to10); and article of 23 December 1887 in support from JUS the 'weekly organ of individualism' (item 12) (see papers relating to Liberty and Property Defence League subscription, items 35 and 36).
Also includes appointment of Hubert de Burgh Canning as Deputy Lieutenant of Galway by his father the Lord Lieutenant in March 1869 (item 39).
