Correspondence relating to the appointment to the posts of Private Secretary and Military Secretary to the Governor General. Consists of:
Correspondence with Captain Charles Denison, and his brother Stephen Denison, regarding position of Military Secretary, 24 Jul-9 Sep 1855. Also copy letter from Canning to General Anson. The position is declined in letter of 9 Sept.
Letter from Captain A. Hervey, 40th Regiment Madras Native Infantry, applying for the office of Private Secretary or Military Secretary, 5 Dec 1855.
Copy letter from Charles Canning to Charles Stuart 8 Mar 1856 regarding position of Military Secretary & reply by Charles Stuart, 2 May 1856, accepting post of Military Secretary but apologising for delay – believes Canning may have appointed Lord Dunkellin. Also letter from Charles Stuart, 25 Oct 1857, informing Canning he has booked passage for Calcutta.
Envelope marked ‘The Hon. G. Talbot’, containing correspondence between Gerald Chetwynd Talbot and Canning regarding appointment as Private Secretary, and subsequent arrangements for retirement. 25 Jan 1856-24 Nov 1857
