Letters from Lord Clanricarde to his brother-in-law Charles Canning, including reaction to Canning's policy in India after the Rebellion, advising him not to consider resigning, sporting matters and general gossip. Includes telegrams from Clanricarde and his son Lord Dunkellin telling of Lord Ellenborough's resignation from Government, May 1858.
Also copy of letter from Canning to Lord Clanricarde, 18 Jan 1857, with a cutting from The Bengal Hurkaru newspaper dated 6 Oct 1856 regarding an incident in which Lord Dunkellin, Military Secretary, gave 'three females of abandoned character' tickets to a ball. In envelope annotated 'Lord Dunkellin's social lapse in Calcutta & termination of his appointment as Military Secretary'.
Also copy of letter from Lord Clanricarde at Portumna to Lord Granville regarding Charles Canning and an article in The Daily News, 2 Nov 1857. Copy made by Charles Canning;s sister Harriet, Lady Clanricarde. Note by Michael Maclagan, stating 'This is a copy of the letter referred to in Fitzmaurice: Granville, vol I, p264'.
