Bundle of letters to Charles Canning regarding the Earl of Derby and domestic politics, urging Canning not to resign over the publication of Lord Ellenborough's letter, criticising him over the Oude proclamation. Correspondents include Lord Aberdeen, Stephen Denison, Alexander Oswald, William E. Gladstone, the Duke of Newcastle, Lord Stanley, Sir John Low, Sidney Herbert, and Frederick Bruce. Also letter from Elliot Macnaghten enclosing copy of resolution of the Court of Directors of the East India Company expressing their continued confidence in Canning as Governor General. Includes letter from William E. Gladstone, which is addressed to an unidentified recipient and forwarded to Canning [Aug? 1858]. Together with wrapper annotated 'Letters to Lord Canning Chiefly in May 1858. Partially burned in my desk CC'. These items were damaged by fire on 11 Dec 1859 and underwent conservation in 2018.
Also draft incomplete letter from Charles Canning to Lord Granville, Allahabad, 15 June 1858, in reply to Granville's letter of 10 May 1858, stating that he has no intention of resigning, and defends the Oude Proclamation.
